is it a bad idea to switch to linux if i am a total n00b who has never used linux and doesn’t know what a kernal is (is that even important‽)

DEFINITELY start out on a machine you dont care abt tho, so you dont ruin it. its a bit of a learning curve
A virtual machine is a good alternative, too. It's less expensive but takes up more space on your PC
