hi can people stop complaining about repost chains please. it really bugs me, since it’s meta about people just having fun. there is, as far as i’m aware, no strain on the servers from doing it (i would imagine they’re simply a reference to the post, which is then dereferenced n times for the api representation). on the website, you have to explicitly click to reveal sub-posts, meaning it’s your fault if it gets large, and you can reload if it screws up your layout. as for wasteof for android, you can just Not Look At The Post. that’s an option. sure, it’s a little bit annoying to scroll past, but you are using a third party client (even if it’s labelled official), that isn’t developed by jeffalo. it’s also probably on micah’s to-do list. additionally, like tumblr, reposting is the only way to add a comment to something while making show as an original post. jeffalo could do like tumblr did and change the post to show on the same layer as the original post, meaning it doesn’t fuck up the layout the further in the post gets. then, there could just be a view more button like the current implementation.

by definition of "official" , wasteof for Android is not third-party. Regardless, you are correct that handling deep repost chains is on the to-do list.

i do too but i feel like there’s a difference between unnecessary fighting that makes it difficult to use the app without coming out of it feeling sad, and fun that causes an app made by a community member that isn’t used by most of the app’s user base to slow down due to the personal choice of the developer (of course i’m not arguing with you about that (you don't seem like the kind of person who acts like some other people do), i’m highlighting the differences in our experiences that caused one of us to post bangers and the other to post really infrequently because of negative experiences)

+1. if you want to discuss something that will make it difficult for other people to use the site, use comments, where only the people who want to have to scroll past your conversations.
the only way to actually make your response seen to your followers shouldn’t make the site difficult to use. of course people are going to see the post multiple times, that’s how reposting works. i really don’t understand why this is an issue, you scroll past posts you don’t like all the time
yeah but scrolling past 40+ posts in like 24 hours is a bit excessive (each one is quite long too)
also jeffalo has said he would rather people don't create such long repost chains and it's his website so he should definitely be able to add limits if he wants to
i just find them sorta annoying, especially when they're used how comments are supposed to be used (for long discussions) or when people try to use them to compete or something (like happened on darflen) and cause just generally spammy posts :/
i’m pretty sure jeffalo also doesn’t love them, especially when you’re not really contributing anything meaningful but just using them for the sake of making the longest chain possible.
yeah if the changes i suggested were implemented it wouldn’t screw up the layout of posts if people were just making a repost chain of the same thing, since it would just be continuous

but who defines what's "natural"? is the grilled cheese wasteof chain (which is completely unrelated to grilled cheeses now) natural? there are over 30 posts in my feed now due to it (all of them vbeing quite long) so it's definitely negatively impacting my feed :/
yeah but like i said there’s no way to put that comment on a feed, it’s required to use reposts for that purpose. when people make this argument it makes no sense, since reposts then have no point bar sharing posts, which can just be done like twitter retweets.

no, reposts are fine, but when the only point of a repost is to endlessly make a chain longer, it becomes problematic. jeffalo has said before that you should avoid doing this type of thing as every post in a repost chain is shown separately on the feed, which is very annoying/disruptive to people's feeds and doesn't really serve much benefit. if you want to have a long chain of replies such as this recent repost chain, why not just create a post and say "if you want to participate, comment under this post" or something. this means that only the people who care about the chain have to do the scrolling thus not negatively affecting anyone else.
i don't think the limits should be unreasonable, but some amount of limitation wouldn't be a bad thing.
