does anyone else absolutely love an album that everyone seems to hate?
mine like that is medazzaland by duran duran
extremely underrated and unique album in their discography and everyone just hates it
I see people look down at Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino by Arctic Monkeys and in my view it’s one of my favourite albums from them, I love the lounge sound that’s fused with psychedelic pop/rock, the theme of a hotel in space that is used in the lyrics to talk about technology and other dystopian concepts is interesting and creative. Plus I just have a soft spot for artists who take a big creative left turn after gaining success (they released Tranquillity Base after AM which was their first album to go mainstream in America, and that album sounds almost nothing like Tranquility Base, nor was it a concept album like Tranquility Base is).
mine is x&y by coldplay
it’s crazy that one of their most creative album is also one of the most looked down on; even the band hates it
pretty sure duran duran also hates the medazzaland album as they never perform songs from it live, but one of the members who did the majority of songwriting on it said it holds up well (i think he’s different musically though and thats why it has such a unique style)
I think X&Y suffered from 2 main things, the first thing is that at the time Coldplay were under immense pressure to follow up the massive success of Parachutes and A Rush Of Blood To The Head, when they delayed X&Y iirc their label’s stock price dropped, that was how big the expectation were. From what I read the band argued a lot during the recording and just didn’t enjoy the process of making X&Y much, it’s a more personal dislike around the making of the album rather than a dislike of the album itself, I’ve read a bit about their feelings about X&Y, and it seems like they would want to refine and edit the album better, they do like stuff like Fix You (which makes sense since that song is great). The second issue is where it sits in their discog, it comes after 2 albums that are quite similar in sound, and X&Y does carry a lot of the same aspects (albeit while adding new stuff into the mix) and was succeeded by Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends which was a massive shake up sonically, and I would argue is even more creative than X&Y in some ways.
Whoa that was actually summed up quite well
