Happy New Year everyone!

I spend too much time on wasteof. But of all the places on the internet, this is the only one that is worth coming back to multiple times a day.

Now, I present my goals for 2024. The goals are all specific and quantifiable, so I can measure if I complete them. Here they are:

  1. Run a 5k in under 20 mins by March, under 18 mins by August, and under 16 mins by November

  2. Run over 1500 miles in total

  3. Run a race every month - except January because I canā€™t find a single convenient race that month.

  4. Finish school early - Iā€™m on track to finish 1-2 weeks early, so I want to keep, if not improve, that lead

  5. Bring the wasteof iOS app to feature parity with wasteof2 by July, and to parity with wasteof4 by November

  6. Do some other big coding project

  7. Read the book of John, taking it slowly through the book - Goal is 3-4 verses per day, John has 879 verses so it should take up the majority of the year

  8. Become (at least) friends with my crush. ā€œBecoming friendsā€ is defined as getting her phone number. I wonā€™t see her until August, though and I barely know her. And Iā€™m the most awkward person ever. Weā€™ll see.

  9. Buy an iPhone 16 Pro Max and Apple Watch Series 10 when they come out.

  10. Get a driverā€™s license by August - I need 60 hours of driving practice in total, I have about 10 so far. I havenā€™t been trying though.

  11. Get a job.

  12. Repost this weekly with progress updates on what Iā€™ve done to keep myself accountable.

2023 was the greatest year of my life. 2024 will be even better. Letā€™s get it.

Week 7/52

Time is flying by so fast. This week I:

  • 2: Ran 37 miles. Iā€™m slowly building my mileage over a couple of weeks.

  • 9: I got an Apple Watch series 9 today, I donā€™t know if it counts. Iā€™ve been needing a new watch and I just couldnā€™t wait for the Series 10.

I really need to pick up on driving and coding, it seems like whenever I focus on one thing, the other thing suffers.

I did this again but with counties. This map includes the Great Lakes as coastline. The most landlocked counties in the country are Geary, Riley, and Clay counties in Kansas. From these, you must pass through at least 19 other counties to reach any ocean or the Great Lakes.

Apologies if youā€™re colorblind, this map is gonna be garbage especially if you canā€™t see green or blue.

US states by landlocked status

States are landlocked if they touch no coastlines, but if they touch only landlocked states, they are doubly landlocked. If touching only doubly landlocked states they are triply landlocked, and so on.

If weā€™re not counting the Great Lakes, Minnesota is the most landlocked state, being quadruply landlocked. Youā€™d have to cross at least 4 states in any route you took to the ocean.

If weā€™re counting the Great Lakes as coastline, thereā€™s only doubly landlocked states.

Worldwide, there are 44 landlocked countries, but only Uzbekistan and Liechtenstein are doubly landlocked.

Also, I logged into all my alts and unfollowed myself on all of them (except Iā€™m still following myself, to see my own posts in my feed). It cost me 24 followers and 1 place on the top users leaderboard, but now my follower count is purely other people who legitimately followed me. I was wanting to do this for a while but didnā€™t have enough time to do it.

Iā€™m gonna try to lower my wasteof usage in the next few weeks (at least). Iā€™ve been getting into trouble with debates and arguments on here, and itā€™s generally not conducive to the type of life I want to live. I will still at least post the weekly updates.

Also, I will try to run b4us more consistently. I set an actual reminder for myself to do it.

I like to debate, if it doesnā€™t devolve into personal attacks. Many other people donā€™t like to do this. Itā€™s gotten me into trouble before.

I donā€™t know what to do about it though, because I canā€™t turn it off. Inevitably, in a moment of carelessness, I will post a response to someoneā€™s post even when I really shouldnā€™t (as weā€™ve seen with the mef thing yesterday). Anyone have any ides for what to do?

What safeguards should I put in place to stop myself from doing this again? Or, perhaps there should be a separate place to debate complex topics (wasteof isnā€™t really meant for it anyways, itā€™s hard to navigate long comment chains)

I hate driving. Iā€™ve been thinking about this recently and I think I know why. Iā€™m not an input/output loop type of person. If that doesnā€™t make sense, let me explain. Anything that requires processing stimuli and responding quickly - Iā€™m terrible at. For example, I barely ever play video games, and when I do, Iā€™m awful at them. And Iā€™ve never been good at team sports that require an input/output loop (basically any sport except track and field or cross country). Whenever I play basketball with other people, Iā€™m awful.

I am good at the input side of things. I can take in a lot of stimuli and process it (though not necessarily quickly). Other people often compliment me in this (though not in such a technical way).

The gap between input and output is the problem. In Super Smash Bros, for example, I canā€™t track the players and come up with my next move and execute it in real time. I can track the players easily, but not respond. This may have been improvable when I was young, but I donā€™t think I can improve my hand-eye coordination this far into life.

Anyways, this is why I hate driving. Itā€™s a very high-risk input/output loop. It just saps my energy. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and this is one of my weaknesses.

Week 6/52

Iā€™ve been realizing that some of these goals are not necessarily good. For example, running a race every month isnā€™t always good (itā€™s better to have 2 big peaks in the spring and fall). But, Iā€™m still going to try for these. Theyā€™re not necessarily bad.

  • 2. I ran 33 miles this week, Iā€™m trying to boost my mileage. Iā€™m still below what I need to be at in total (143 miles right now) but I can easily catch up.

  • 5. My dad got the apple developer account šŸŽ‰ so I just need to clean up the app and release a beta.

  • 10. Iā€™m realizing how much I hate driving. I might make a separate post about this later, but iā€™ve made a ton of posts today. Anyways, I did no driving this week. I just really hate doing it.

A lot of people outside of America are confused by Super Bowl ā€œFootballā€ so here are a few facts and pointers:

  1. The sport is called football as the ball is exactly 12 inches in length.

  2. Play consists of 112 quarters, each one lasts for about 30 seconds.

  3. During this time players must carry the ā€œFootballā€ (or ā€œGameballā€ or ā€œStitchfaceā€) as far as possible into the score zone while the other team attempts to kill them.

  4. Once a player has been successfully killed, play is paused while everyone on the other team has the chance to say something nice about them.

  5. In the unlikely event the football is successfully carried into the score zone a ā€œtouchdownerā€ is awarded (worth 5 points) and the player can earn a further 27 points by kicking the ball through the goalsticks.

  6. In the fifth quarter, the teams are allowed to wear their own clothes.

  7. MULTIBALL can be called at any time.

  8. The iconic football helmet is worn to stop the players from kissing each other.

  9. Play can only stop when everyone has thanked the referee (or ā€œumpireā€) and given them a small present (usually a book token). Technically Super Bowl XXI is still being played to this day as someone from the Denver Racoons forgot to do so.

  10. Each player who has the honour of Super Bowling is given a large jewel-encrusted gold ring, that is worn through the nipple.

Hope this is helpful to anyone who is unsure about the game!

Did you know? There are three supported image hosts on wasteof:

but you can actually post images from a 4th host: https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/twitter/[email protected]/assets/72x72/*

itā€™s the emojis on the site, but you can post them as normal images as well. Hereā€™s an example:
