I’m torn about Rishi proposing mandatory armed forces services or voluntary work at 18 since whilst it’s a terrible idea, it makes it certain the authoritarian prick will loose
Only good thing about him is that he supports Southampton. UP THE FUCKING SAINTS
sports bring us together
The thing is they actually need to do that. Europe is in a lot of danger right now because if Trump wins he will almost certainly weaken NATO in some way, or even leave, and he isn’t fully committed to supporting Europe if it got attacked.
If Russia attacked Europe with Trump as president (which they have talked about doing), Europe would almost certainly not be able to withstand a battle-hardened Russian army alone. NATO is propped up right now almost entirely by American strength. Losing American backing would be devastating to it and that’s why European countries are scrambling to build up their forces right now.
TLDR: strategically, it’s probably the right decision.
Also, it’s not actually an authoritarian thing to do. Countries like Switzerland, Finland, and Austria already do it, and they’re some of the most free countries in the world
mate, UK will be fine. Russia isn’t attempting to attack us or anyone else in europe apart from ukraine. If Russia were attempting to form the USSR they would’ve attacked weaker countries. I don’t want to do work in the military as I’m not interested or motivated to do it. If someone does invade the UK, than I would fight and I believe all male adults should be made to fight (unless they have an acceptable reason).
The argument of “other good countries do it so we should” doesn’t make the idea good. Norway is a great nation but having a 60% tax rate for some people is stupid, for example.
They don’t want to invade the UK but if Russia attacked other countries (Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia are big targets for them) the UK would be required to respond.
Cool that doesn’t mean every person needs to fight
Why wouldn’t Russia invade the baltics first since they’re weaker than Ukraine?
They invaded Ukraine first because the Baltics are members of NATO, which they don’t want to mess with first
Fair but surely that means they won’t mess with nato countries (I don’t think that will change that much if trump is in charge of US)
Yeah Trump likes to talk a lot and not actually do anything
chamberlain is smiling in his grave. beware.
It's a great thing because it's destroyed any chance of getting the young vote at all. He's basically speedrunning losing the election. Which is kinda satisfying to watch after how much the British public has suffered under the Tories imo lol
also I agree with it being a horrid idea too lol, calling the alternative to military service "volunteer work" is so funny because it's the opposite of voluntary, it would be mandatory
Exactly lmao
"Congratulations on becoming a legal adult! This is a huge milestone in your young life, cherish it. Remember, you still have a whole life to live! Anyhoo, go out and die for us <3"
i mean u could just do community service, which aint that bad lol, also ig if the idea behind it rlly was to bring ppl of dif backgrounds together then it isnt rlly ill-intended. having said that tho, its political suicide considering theres a fuking election coming up lol
Why's it suicide?
bcus labour were already favourable, and this decision is very bold, so its gonna polarise a lotta people abt who to vote for
Oh you mean suicide for the authoritarian prick
