I’ve been seeing a lot of controversy on the internet regarding the fact that iOS 18 is bringing RCS (which is going to make the texting experience better for literally everyone). People are saying that when compare the RCS and iMessage standards, iMessage is inherently better. They’re half correct - yes, iMessage has a lot of features that RCS will most likely never have. However, what they’re missing is the fact that iMessage isn’t a standard. It’s a proprietary, internet-based chat software owned exclusively by Apple. Yeah, texting between iPhones and Androids is never going to be as good as texting between two iPhones, but it’s not because there’s a superior “standard”. It’s because Apple knows that their ecosystem is how they lock customers in, and so they won’t ever allow iMessage to be a standard, nor will they try very hard to keep up to date with RCS standards.
so in other words, it’s all apple’s fault?
for railroading users into using their software because it has some, let’s admit it, useless quality-of-life features that standardized RCS doesn’t have, yeah
Kind of - it’s their fault for advertising iMessage as “texting” when in reality it’s just an online chat service just like Google Chat, or Whatsapp, or Facebook Messenger. Then it seems like Android phones are “missing” this big texting feature when in reality it’s just an online chat service that Apple decided to shove into their texting app along with SMS and now RCS.
This is the wrong definition of texting in my opinion - texting doesn’t have to be an open standard or based on cellular service, it just has to be phone-to-phone text communication
regardless of what your opinion of what texting is, when I say "I'll text you" that generally does not refer to like a Discord DM or a Google Chat message - instead, it would mean that the message was sent and received from my device's texting app, aka Messages.
